Providing Basic Needs

  

When a lady appeared at the door of the Red Cross last winter asking for food, the volunteers of the food pantry were prepared to help.                                       

 
“She had been living in the cold weather with no food for several days,” said Jana Nowell, Executive Director of the Rockingham County Chapter of the American Red Cross. “She asked that we give her food that would not have to be cooked, so we gave her pop-top canned food she could take with her. She was most likely homeless.”

As the lady was leaving, she turned back to Jana and asked who gave the money to provide food in the pantry. Jana explained that the pantry is stocked thanks to funding from the United Way and the generosity of the people of Rockingham County. “Whoever gives you the money,” replied the lady, “tell them they just saved a life.”
   
 
Together, we provide basic needs of food, shelter, clothing and utilities for Rockingham County citizens.
